Chicago is opening the Robey hotel in an 87-year-old building, right in the middle of the Wicker Park neighborhood. The renovation of the art deco building took about four years to complete and now is ready to open for business.
The hotel is operated by Mexico City’s Grupo Habita, which was co-founded by Carlos Couturier. Carlos has expressed their intentions of keeping the building’s original aesthetics as intact as possible throughout the renovation process.
“We did not want to impose anything on a building so emblematic to the neighborhood. The challenge was to maintain its identity and spirit through our work.”
The hotel itself has 69 rooms, and then right next door they also built as upscale hostel called The Hollander, which has 65 beds in 20 rooms.
Carlos described the hostel as a “universe of people” and encourages guests to link their reservation to their Instagram account since “It’s about a social experience.”
