Virgin Australia is being sued for spilling coffee on a teenage passenger. When the incident occurred last year the teen reportedly suffered from burns, blisters, and scarring to his genital region, thighs, groin, and midriff.
The 16-year-old boy named Rhett Butler was on a flight from Los Angeles International Airport to Sydney, Australia at the time. A member of the cabin crew dropped a coffee tray onto the boy shortly after the plane took off.
In the lawsuit that was filed in the County Court of Victoria, the tray table was defective and the boy’s father Brian Butler had to assist his son through the incident when no medical help was offered onboard.
Virgin has confirmed that the incident took place, but didn’t share any details about the lawsuit. A spokesperson for the airline released a statement about the incident.
“Virgin Australia takes the safety and comfort of our passengers extremely seriously, however given this particular matter has not yet been resolved it would not be appropriate to comment any further.”
