On Sunday Elon Musk took part in a Reddit Ask Me Anything called “I am Elon Musk, ask me anything about becoming a spacefaring civ!” Last month the Tesla and SpaceX founder spoke about his plans to colonize Mars at the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, and naturally people had plenty of questions about how that process might work.
One of the things that Elon shared, was that he thinks the first city on Mars will be made up of geodesic domes built from carbon fiber frames and glass panes.
He also discussed the possibility of leaving the domes for green living space, and building an underground city with “a lot of miner/tunneling droids” for “huge amounts of pressurized space for industrial operations.”
Elon’s company SpaceX is already developing the spaceship that will take people back and forth between the planets, and he hopes to have one million people living on Mars within the next 40 to 100 years.
They also intend to build a propellant system which will provide fuel for the process of shuttling people back and forth.
