A Dutch company called Soel Yachts, has teamed up with a firm called Naval DC to create a solar powered catamaran.
The fiberglass boat was specifically designed to be used in saltwater, and can easily navigate shallow lagoons, reefs, and bays.
Joep Koster, the designer and naval architect at Soel Yachts, spoke about the design.
“The [boat] offers a 100 percent sustainable alternative to conventionally powered boats used in the industry so far.”
The boat is 39-feet-long and holds up to 24 people. Its cruise speeds go from seven to 17 MPH.
Naval DC founder, David Czap, added:
“At six knots, the vessel operates entirely off the energy provided by the solar panels during the sunshine hours.”
When the boat is traveling at faster speeds, it will also get a boost from lithium batteries. Without a combustion engine the ride on the boat is not only better for the environment, but it will create a quieter ride as well, without the smell of any fumes to go along with it.
