Thailand is currently in a month-long mourning period following the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, on October 13, and tourists are suggested to take part as well by dressing and acting respectfully.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has explained that it is not mandatory to dress in all black or white clothing as traditionally done, but that tourists should take care to dress in clothing that is “appropriate and respectable.”
Tourists are also asked to avoid disrespectful behavior, which includes that entertainment venues tone things down a bit where nightlife and performances are concerned.
All of the tourist attractions will remain open as normal, except for the Wat Phra Kaeo (the Temple of the Emerald Buddha), and the Grand Palace, which will be hosting the royal funeral.
The Tourism Authority Board also added that public businesses and transportation will be open and running as usual, but that “many people will be traveling from the provinces to Bangkok during the mourning period to pay their respects to the king. This may cause some congestion in certain parts of the city.”
