A new Statue of Liberty museum is expected to open in 2019. The museum will be located on Liberty Island in New York over a 26,000 square foot space.
The current Statue of Liberty museum is located inside of the Statue of Liberty monument, and since September 11 only small amounts of people are allowed to access it for safety reasons. The new larger version of the museum will allow more visitors to enter the museum and learn about the historical significance of the statue, both past and present.
There are around 4.3 million people who travel out to the island each year to check out the Statue of Liberty, so the museum should be a welcome addition. The museum entrance will be free with the purchase of the Ferry ticket that you have to buy to get over to the island at all, so it will be available to everyone who heads over to Liberty Island.
The museum will have artifacts, exhibits, and a mural. The island will remain open during the construction of the museum, and the museum will finally open to the public in 2019. The project is expected to cost $70 million.
