Turkish officials are beginning to rebuild in the wake of last Tuesday’s violent attack on Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport. According to Turkish authorities, Rakim Bulgarov, Vadim Osmanov, and an as-yet-unidentified third man walked into the airport armed with assault rifles and suicide bombs, opening fire. The horrifying attack claimed 44 lives and saw more than 200 people injured.
Today, though, there is a little progress as the country sidles back towards normalcy. While authorities crack down on suspects — more than 24 people have been detained — more than 184 of the airport victims have been discharged so far. Unfortunately, fifty-two more people are still in the hospital and twenty of them are still in intensive care. It’s another in a line of tragic events that have rocked countries around the world in recent months.
Though no one has claimed responsibility, Turkish state authorities believe the attack was the work of the Islamic State.
Let’s close this post out on this note: the odds of actually encountering a terrorist event while traveling is pretty astronomical. While it seems as though you’re in constant threat of terrorist attack the moment you step foot outside your neighborhood, that simply isn’t the case. Don’t let these reports scare you from experiencing our big, beautiful world.
