You’d be hard pressed to find more beautiful beached the world over than Turks and Caicos, a British territory southeast of the Bahamas. The little island chain is home to some of the world’s most pristine beaches and clearest waters. Honestly, if you’re like most people, that description alone would probably be enough to get you booking a flight. Thanks to Potcake Place, though, tourists are getting yet another reason to visit the tropical paradise.
In a word: puppies. Potcake Place is a puppy rescue based in Turks and Caicos that’s responsible for about 50 to 75 puppies at any given time. The proprietors at the rescue take the dogs down to the beach in Providenciales (coincidentally the most tourist-friendly location in the island chain) and let them mingle with tourists and potential adopters.
According to the HuffingtonPost visitors or locals can drop by Potcake Place and get matched up with a dog for a two-hour romp on the beach. While there are rules in place to help keep the pooches safe, the practice has proven incredibly popular. Potcake Place’s owner says that the holiday season can see people lining up nearly two hours before the shelter opens.
The rescue’s clever strategy has not only helped the socialization of countless puppies, it’s also widened the potential for adoption to thousands more people, a tactic that’s helped countless dogs find a new forever home.
