As the temperature heats up, it’s only natural for your thoughts to wander from the computer screen right in front of you, meandering to more inviting locations or more adventurous climes. If you’re planning to make your dream a reality, though, you should probably check with the US Department of State first. Yesterday, the government agency issued a warning to any travelers considering a European vacation this summer.
French president François Hollande recently proclaimed that terrorism was a grave threat facing France this summer, especially in light of the upcoming UEFA football championship and the annual Tour de France. As a result of the high profile events, Hollande extended the country’s terror alert until July 27.
The Department of State — reacting to both this announcement and the recent rash of violent incidents in European countries — has issued a travel warning for the whole continent of Europe from now until August 31. According to the Guardian, “Unlike travel warnings, travel alerts are issued for a defined period of time around short-term events” and ‘are issued when the State Department wants “you to consider very carefully whether you should go to a country at all.’”
While authorities aren’t currently aware of any credible terrorist plots in the works, authorities from both France and England have echoed the State Department’s warning and advised caution if you’re planning to visit Europe this summer.
