Here’s a little travel news that may or may not come as a shock (depending on how much you pay attention to international crime news). According to CNN, the Caribbean is becoming increasingly popular with tourists looking to have a little fun in the sun.
The World Tourism Organization explains the growth spurt by pointing to the Caribbean’s recent overhaul in terms of its accommodations, the recent growth of airlines who offer lots of (cheap) flights to the area, and the fact that — by the numbers — the global economy is on the rebound so more people have more money to travel to exotic, sun-drenched locations. (The seemingly inescapable tone of global discontent is also contributing.)
In 2015, the Caribbean welcomed so many new travelers (the industry grew by around 7.5 percent), they nearly doubled the global average. That could be due to the innumerable opportunities for travelers to design a beach vacation their way thanks to the Caribbean’s diverse, yet universally lush geography.
While the Caribbean is still a hot bed for certain criminal activity, it’s undeniably impossible to not get pulled in by the serene and stunning beaches the islands are known for. It’s well worth the risk of a potential pick pocket.
