Amsterdam’s Mellow Yellow coffee shop has been around since 1967, but new legislation has shut down the property for being close to a school. The proximity rule has been put in place as an effort to stop underage marijuana use.
The move has some worrying that the days of Amsterdam’s days of weed tourism could be slowing down, which would result in the closing of a lot more coffee shops as well. The amount of coffee shops has already been cut in half since the 1990’s, and if things continue at this rate they could all be closed within the next ten years.
It has been estimated that 25 percent of Amsterdam tourists visit a coffee shop each day, so things would change if none of them remained.
The Mellow Yellow’s owner Johnny Petram said that:
“I tried to make the best of it but it was the worst day of my life. Mellow Yellow was the oldest coffee shop in Amsterdam and now it’s gone.”
